Position Overview:
We are seeking a passionate, detail-oriented, and knowledgeable Food Science Intern to join our team at Handy Farms. In this role, you will play a key role in ensuring the fresh nutritional integrity of our packaged food products. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in nutrition science, with a focus on food packaging, labeling, and maintaining high-quality standards in food production.
This position will require one week long on site work experience at Handy Farms to assist in harvest picking, packaging, and shipping fresh food items in a timely fashion with packaging preserving freshness. The fresh picking experience includes fresh nuts, fresh fruit. There may be an alternative Weston A Price Foundation event for those who can not make the fresh harvest. Four hundred and eighty hours in internship typically between 10-12 weeks during your off track.
Key Responsibilities:
- Packaging Analysis and Selection: Study, review, and purchase or create the best packaging to preserve freshness while maintaining affordability.
- Nutritional Analysis: Review and analyze the nutritional content of all food products before packaging to ensure accuracy and compliance with industry standards.
- Packaging Coordination: Work closely with the production team to implement processes and oversee the proper packaging of nutritional products, ensuring that they are labeled correctly with all required nutritional information and bar codes.
- Nutritional Labeling: Develop and update nutritional labels based on regulatory guidelines and ensure that all labels are compliant with local, state, and federal food laws.
- Product Evaluation: Assess raw ingredients and final products for nutritional value, quality, and safety, ensuring they meet Handy Farms’ standards for health-conscious food. Then implement a product development plan for direct mailing to customers and grocery store outlets with highest earning potential regionally available for delivery by our team.
- Research & Development: Collaborate with the R&D team to create new nutritious food products, and recipes offering insights on dietary needs and trends. Then share on our digital platforms for clients.
- Quality Assurance: Ensure that the packaging process maintains the integrity of the product and that all packaging materials are in compliance with food safety standards. Ideally compostable or recyclable. Then preserve longevity of produce.
- Consumer Education: Assist in developing consumer-facing digital resources and digital educational materials that highlight the nutritional benefits of Handy Farms products.
- Regulatory Compliance: Stay up to date with food labeling regulations, nutrition claims, and health trends to ensure compliance across all product lines.
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition, Food Science, or a related field.
- Experience: Junior or Senior year with relevant coursework or experience in a nutrition-focused food packaging role, preferably in a farm-to-table or food production environment.
- Knowledge: Strong understanding of food labeling regulations, nutritional science, and quality control processes.
- Skills:
- Proficient in nutrition analysis software and food labeling tools.
- Excellent communication skills to work with cross-functional teams and provide consumer education.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with tight deadlines.
Additional Requirements:
- A passion for healthy eating, sustainability, and community-focused agriculture.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds (for packaging and storage tasks).
- Comfortable working in a food production environment and office environment
- Flexibility to work varying shifts as needed to meet production schedules.
