How to Sprout Raw Walnuts
Raw Sprouted Walnuts
Have you heard of sprouted walnuts? Sprouting walnuts is a great way to get nuts that taste better and support gut health. Plus, it’s super easy to do in your own home! Mrs. Handy has shared with us how to sprout red Livermore walnuts. With just a couple, simple ingredients, you’ll be enjoying creamy, crispy nuts in no time!
Why Sprouted Walnuts?
Before we dive into the method, why do people sprout walnuts? Are sprouted walnuts better? Here are a couple advantages of sprouted walnuts:
-
Less tannic acid, smoother taste: Regular raw walnuts taste slightly bitter from tannins. Sprouting helps reduce that, making the nut creamier and more enjoyable to eat.
-
Better digestibility & nutrient absorption: The sprouting process helps activate enzymes, reduce phytic acid, and make minerals more bioavailable.
-
Nutrient-dense profile: Walnuts already offer omega-3s, antioxidants, and healthy fats. Sprouting just makes it easier for your body to use those nutrients.
Using Red Livermore Walnuts is our top recommendation. These walnuts have less tannic acid, so they’ll be extra delicious once you sprout them! Plus, we grow and hand-harvest every nut at our organic, regenerative farm, so you can be sure that you’re getting clean, nutritious food.
How to Make Raw Sprouted Red Walnuts at Home
We like to keep things simple and natural here at Handy Farms. This recipe is effective, but doesn’t use any extra ingredients that aren’t neccessary. The sprouted nuts you are getting are as close to natural as you can get.
What You’ll Need
-
~1.5 pounds of organic red Livermore walnuts
-
Filtered water
-
A small pinch of sea salt
The Step-by-Step Process
-
Soak the walnuts: Sprinkle the nuts with salt, then submerge them fully in water. Let them sit for 8–12 hours, or overnight.
-
Observe the water change. As the nuts soak, antioxidant and tannic compounds leach into the water. You’ll notice the water turning darker—this is a good sign.
-
Drain & rinse thoroughly. After they have soaked for 8-12 hours, rinse the walnuts well.
-
Dry to crisp them. If you want your sprouted walnuts to be crispy and crunchy, you can dry them in a dehydrator or oven at a low temperature.
-
Store or enjoy immediately. Once crisp, they store well for up to 3 months at room temperature and up to a year in the fridge. If you like them soft, you can skip the crisping, but the shelf life will be shorter.
